Senior Free Ride Program
Posted on 07/01/2009
Who is eligible?
- Senior citizens aged 65 or over living in the RTA service region (Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties) are eligible for free transit on fixed routes operated by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA), Metra and Pace.
- To take advantage of the free transit, seniors must have the senior reduced fare card to get a free ride.
I'm a senior and already have a senior reduced fare card. What do I need to do?
- If you already have a senior reduced fare card, you are already registered. Your reduced fare card will work on March 17th to allow you to take transit for free.
- In the months ahead, the RTA will transition all holders of the current reduced fare permit to a new smart card. The smart card will make it faster and easier for seniors when boarding. Current permit holders will be notified when these cards are available.
I'm a senior but I don't have a senior reduced fare card and would like to have free transit. What do I need to do?
- Simply sign up for the RTA's senior reduced fare program at Prospect Heights City Hall.
PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION SHEET ATTACHED BELOW BY CLICKING ON THE "DOWNLOAD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE". PLEASE BRING THE FORMS OF IDENTIFICATION NEEDED (located on page 2). We will not be able to process your application without these documents/identifiation.
- Register during normal business hours at the RTA's Customer Service Center at 165 N Jefferson or any one of the 270 sites around our region. For more information about registration sites go to www.rtachicago.com or call 836-7000 from any area code, provide your zip code and they will give you your nearest location.
- Processing usually takes 3-4 weeks from when we receive your application and they will mail you your senior reduced fare card.
When do the free rides for seniors begin?
- The free rides will begin on MARCH 17, 2008.
Once I have my senior reduced fare card, what will I need to do to get my free ride?
- To get your free ride you may have to show your permit to the driver, ticket agent, conductor or you can use it at a turnstile or in a farebox.
- Metra riders will get a free ride ticket upon showing your permit at the ticket office if open or to on board personnel.
